On August 13, 2017, The Great Movie Ride will make its final appearance. The last of the original rides/attractions to open along with Disney’s MGM Studios on May 1, 1989, now known as Hollywood Studios, is closing for good. The ride, which is housed in the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre building, takes guests through an area with movie memorabilia, a loop of film history narrated by the late Robert Osborn of Turner Classic Movies, and then on to a pair of large trackless vehicles where you sit comfortably while going through a number of movie sets from historic and famous pictures.
Some pictures from a few of our rides over the years.
A number of genres are represented, from dance and musical movies, to gangster and cowboy flicks, action/adventure, romance, sci-fi and horror films, animated films, and other classics. Famous actors and movies are shown throughout, with fantastic sets and animatronics to represent them. Some of the greats here are Gene Kelly, Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Judy Garland. Some of the film sets reproduced in this ride include Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Public Enemy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Casablanca, Alien, and near the end of the ride, a huge set of The Wizard of Oz!!!
Watch this full ride video of our last time on The Great Movie Ride.
Some surprises with the ride operator Cast Member and other Interactive CM’s occur, sometimes with the famous Mugsy character, and other times with a cowboy right out of a western! Also, the Oz set with all of the Munchkins, and of course the Wicked Witch of the West is a sight to behold. The ride rounds out with a montage of famous films through the years, and of course a round of applause for your ride operator CM!!!
Here are some more of our pictures from The Great Movie Ride.
The Great Movie Ride will definitely be missed by many, and it is indeed sad to see it go, especially being the last of the originals for this park. Time will tell if the replacement ride, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, can surpass TGMR, but it will have to be pretty great to fill those shoes!!!
Please Comment below on how you feel about TGMR going away, your memories of this ride, what you liked best about it, etc. Also don’t forget to check out our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube media, all under the same WDWpov name. Wow!! This looks so much fun. I would really like to see sets of Mary poppins and Wizard of Oz.
I am sure it must have been an exciting ride.
Unfortunately the only way to see these sets now is through videos. Sorry to see this ride now gone forever!. ;-(
How sad!! I’ve never seen this ride and now I’ll never get to. I love how Disney is constantly updating their rides, but it’s always sad to see the original ones going away. It’s fun to see where it all started. I need to get over there soon!
Yes, you never know from one trip to the next what rides may not be there, so ride them while you still can. Glad I video recorded that ride the last time we were there. Had no idea at the time it would be our last time on The Great Movie Ride, but at least we can watch it over and over on our YouTube channel. 😉
I hope they’ll keep it since it’s something so memorable! The beautiful shots tell how awesome it is!

Unfortunately, it is now gone for good. Only will be able to watch it on videos from now on. ;-(
Aww man this attraction seems so cool! Kind of sad we will never get to see it.
I know, we were sad to see it go too. Can watch our video link to YouTube in the article, but nothing can beat actually being there.
Oh no , unfortunately i did not get to see it before its final appearance. The pictures looks great now it makes me sad that i didn’t get to see it.
At least you can go back to our YouTube video link, but seeing it on person is now a thing of the past. ;-(
Aw, I never went on this ride. It always seems so sad when older rides are bumped – but exciting to see what else they will add.
Yes, we are hopeful for the new ride coming in, but sad to see the LAST of the original rides at Hollywood Studios gone for good. ;-(
I am not a huge movie buff but I love a good movie. This look like somewhere I can spend hours hanging out.
Unfortunately it is now closed for good. Only way to watch now is through videos, like the one linked in our article.
